South of Syracuse lies the Val di Noto: eight late-Baroque towns, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake in a triumph of staircases, churches and golden-stone palaces. Here are the must-see stops and how to plan them in one or two days.
Noto, capital of the Baroque
About 40 minutes from Villa Natìa, Noto is the flagship stop. A stroll along Corso Vittorio Emanuele reveals, one after another, the Cathedral, the noble palaces and the famous Palazzo Nicolaci with its sculpted balconies. In May the town dresses up for the Infiorata, when Via Nicolaci becomes a carpet of flower petals.
Modica and chocolate
Modica spreads over two levels linked by staircases, crowned by the Cathedral of San Giorgio, a Baroque masterpiece atop a long flight of steps. It is famous for Modica chocolate (PGI), cold-worked to an ancient recipe: a delicious stop not to be missed.
Ragusa Ibla
Ragusa Ibla, the old heart of Ragusa, is a tangle of alleys crowned by the majestic Cathedral of San Giorgio and the green Giardino Ibleo. Fans of the series will recognise many corners from Inspector Montalbano.
Scicli and around
With more time, add Scicli, with its Baroque churches and palaces, and Palazzolo Acreide, a UNESCO village in the Hyblaean Mountains with the ancient Greek site of Akrai.

You will need a car to move between the towns. Spring and autumn are best; in summer, visit in the morning or at sunset, when the light sets the golden stone aglow. From Villa Natìa the Val di Noto is the perfect day trip.
