The Syracuse city beaches
Fontane Bianche (about 20 minutes) is the most famous: fine golden sand, shallow turquoise water, ideal for families, with both free stretches and equipped lidos. Closer to town, Arenella and Ognina offer easy, convenient beaches.
The coves of the Plemmirio
Just minutes from the centre, the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area (about 15 minutes) is a rocky coast of coves and crystalline water, perfect for snorkelling and diving. It is not sand: bring water shoes and enjoy the finest sea in the area.
The Vendicari Reserve
About 40 minutes away, the Vendicari Nature Reserve is a gem: wild beaches such as Calamosche and Eloro, the old tonnara (tuna fishery), and wetlands where flamingos and many migratory birds stop in winter. Comfortable shoes and water are a must: it is a short walk from the car parks, but well worth it.
Marzamemi and the southern tip
Further south, the fishing village of Marzamemi (about 50 minutes), with its little square and seafront restaurants, is worth a stop, perhaps paired with the beaches of San Lorenzo and the Isola delle Correnti, where the Ionian and Mediterranean seas meet.
