From the city shore to wild reserves, the coast around Syracuse offers golden sand, rocky coves and crystal-clear water. Here are the beaches not to miss, starting with Arenella, the closest one, with distances from Villa Natìa and tips to enjoy them at their best.
Arenella: the closest beach to Villa Natìa
Arenella is our home beach: about 15 minutes by car from the villa, along the coast south of Syracuse. It is a sheltered bay of golden sand, with shallow, clear water that makes it easy for families with children. On either side of the sand the shore turns into low, flat rock, simple to reach and perfect for a swim with mask and snorkel.
Along the bay, equipped lidos alternate with free stretches of beach, with bars and restaurants a few steps away: it is the easiest way to spend a day by the sea with no planning, and still be back at the villa for aperitivo. If you feel like walking, follow the coast through Mediterranean scrub and maritime pines to the quieter coves.
The Syracuse city beaches
Fontane Bianche (about 20 minutes) is the most famous: fine golden sand, shallow turquoise water, ideal for families, with both free stretches and equipped lidos. A little further south, Ognina is another easy stop along the coast, with its cove and small harbour.
The coves of the Plemmirio
Just minutes from the centre, the Plemmirio Marine Protected Area (about 15 minutes) is a rocky coast of coves and crystalline water, perfect for snorkelling and diving. It is not sand: bring water shoes and enjoy the finest sea in the area.
The Vendicari Reserve
About 40 minutes away, the Vendicari Nature Reserve is a gem: wild beaches such as Calamosche and Eloro, the old tonnara (tuna fishery), and wetlands where flamingos and many migratory birds stop in winter. Comfortable shoes and water are a must: it is a short walk from the car parks, but well worth it.
Marzamemi and the southern tip
Further south, the fishing village of Marzamemi (about 50 minutes), with its little square and seafront restaurants, is worth a stop, perhaps paired with the beaches of San Lorenzo and the Isola delle Correnti, where the Ionian and Mediterranean seas meet.
Practical tips
The swimming season runs from May to October. You will need a car for the beaches; in the reserves stick to the paths and bring water. In high season, arrive early in the morning for space and shade.
